Me and my friend Pulkit are new grad students and we were exploring the dining options at Arrillaga Dining Hall. We didn’t carry much cash and weren’t sure how to buy a meal block. We discussed with the manager if we could pay for and eat a meal. Naturally after a long day we were really hungry. To our surprise the manager Javier offered us to eat the food free of cost. We were taken aback and couldn’t believe ourselves at first. But we did have a great meal. After the meal we went back to thank him for being generous, but he said something that touched our hearts: “We are here for you!”
I had a pretty rough first day of classes including crashing my bike and never actually finding one of my classes. Those motivational chalk notes made the day so much better, so a shout out to Cedro RA's for being the best!
I visited Stanford for the first time and met lovely Public Affairs staff who were very welcoming!
My favorite memory was Band Run during NSO. It was just a dope experience. I had a lot of fun!
I remember pawing through our Frosh Book before I arrived on campus freshman year in 1987. It included a quote about bike riding on campus requiring vector analysis. I remember chuckling and having no appreciation for what the contributor was trying to convey. Then, six weeks into freshman year, my Branner roommate plowed head on into the Dean of Admissions Jean Fetter, both of whom were on their bikes. They tumbled to the ground; their bodies and their bikes took hard hits; lots of road rash ensued, though there weren't any broken bones. Suddenly, that Frosh Book quote became very real for me. The upside? My roommate had already been admitted to Stanford so Dean Jean wouldn't have been able to exact any lasting revenge.
The hilly Dish trail is in itself unexpected in the middle of an otherwise flat, suburban area, but most surprising is the wild life I encounter on my walks there. Just this past weekend, I saw a hawk, rabbit, toad, mouse, squirrel, and of course, huge cows. It's a beautiful gym and zoo all in one.
One of the best courses I took at Stanford, and the one that made me decide to major in American Studies. I was lucky enough to take the course just after Professor Carson's PBS documentary "Eyes on the Prize" first aired, so we got to watch the series with its creator as our guide. Pretty cool.
