Stanford Memories

Marion Goldstein Bar-DinClass of 1951

Two generations at Stanford

My father, Matt Goldstein, ’20, was the poorest of the poor when he entered Stanford in the mid-1910s. He brought canned beans and other foods into his room from the grocery store in Palo Alto. He was one of eight children and lived on a farm in Sacramento. He got through Stanford on scholarship, loans and his four sisters’ salaries from their jobs in Sacramento. He became an attorney and later a Superior Court judge. His roommate for four years was the wealthy Goodwin J. Knight, who became governor of California.

My father began saving nickels and pennies when I was born, always telling me that I would go to Stanford and that by the time I became 18, he would have enough money to send me to Stanford without my worrying. He did, and I did!

I was in the Class of 1951, and I have had a large family and two successful careers. Thank you, Stanford!
