In the 1890s, basketball in the American West was exclusively a women’s sport. In 1896, Stanford beat the University of California 2-1 in the first intercollegiate women’s basketball game. Since then, the Stanford team has won two NCAA Championships and 11 Pac-10/12 Conference Tournament Championships. Left: The team playing outdoors ca. 1900, wearing sports uniforms of the day. Backboards and dribbling were introduced later. Right: Stanford and Academy of Art University play at Maples Pavilion.
