The Stanford Band began in 1893 as a conservative, all-male organization. Clad in military uniforms, members marched in straight lines with dignity and reverence. In 1963, the newly appointed band director, Arthur Barnes, introduced non-traditional musical repertoire and handed over control of the band to the students.
